The Ephrata Chess team defeated Manheim Township 4-1 in yesterday’s home match. Zeke Jones won on board 1, Bryce Babyak won on board 2, Loi Nguyen won board 3 and Noah Powlus won on board 5. We look forward to play-offs and are currently ranked 3rd in the league. As of now the playoff schedule has not been set but we will keep you posted. The chess team is reminded to check the Schoology Group for any updates.
Attention Juniors: Millersville University will be hosting a College Fair on Thursday March 14th . This fair attracts approximately 100 different colleges, universities, and trade school representatives. This is a great opportunity for 11th graders to interact with and learn about different colleges. The itinerary includes; attending the college fair, having lunch in the Millersville dining hall, and taking a campus tour.
If you are interested in attending, please print out a field trip permission packet. Space is limited, so don’t delay!

The Counseling Office is looking for 6 9th grade students to nominate to attend the HOBY Community Leadership Workshop (CLeW). This workshop will be held Saturday March 23rd from 9:30 AM to 4 PM at the S. Dale High Leadership Center in Lancaster. To be considered for nomination, submit an essay, poem, short story or work of art that explains what leadership means to you to the counseling office by February 15th.

The world’s richest man, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, has accused the owner of a US gossip magazine of trying to blackmail him over lewd pictures. He said the National Enquirer’s parent company, American Media Inc, wanted him to stop investigating how they had obtained his private messages. Bezos and his wife Mackenzie said they were divorcing last month. Hours later the magazine published details, including private messages, of an extramarital affair. AMI has not yet responded to the BBC’s request for comment.

The catastrophic collapse of a dam at a mine in Brazil has exposed a darker side of an industry that the world depends on. At nearly 800 sites across the country and thousands more around the world, dams contain huge loads of mining waste. One British scientist, Dr Stephen Edwards of UCL, has warned that “we are sitting on a time bomb”. He told BBC News that further disasters were inevitable.

In sports action, bowling lost at Lebanon, wrestling lost at York Tech, and the girls basketball team lost their play-in tournament game.
There is a new sport coming to Ephrata this Spring 2019 season, called Unified Track and Field. If you are interested in finding out more about Unified Track and Field, visit room 125 to receive an information packet. There will be an important informational meeting held on February 20th, at 2:45 in room 125, for anyone interested in participating!
Today in sports, swimming is at Wilson for the league meet, and tomorrow, rifle is at CV and winter track is at Lehigh.

This past Wednesday evening Ephrata’s local VFW hosted a dinner celebrating the winners of their audio-essay competition called Voice of Democracy
Established in 1947, the Voice of Democracy program awards students for writing and recording patriotic essays.
Each year nearly 40,000 high school students enter to compete for their share of 2.1 million dollars of scholarships.
The Wednesday night dinner honored two Ephrata high school students. They wrote essays on the prompt: Why My Vote Matters.
Alec Smith earned second place And Jansen Balmer earned third place
