Clay Elementary School hosted an Egg Drop Challenge on Wednesday, April 5, students’ last day before their spring break. This was the second year for the event.
The concept originated last year when fourth-grader Aubrey Alexander approached Clay principal Chris Montagna with her idea. “I wanted to do something with the whole school, so I started coming up with ideas. I talked to Mr. Montagna and presented a slide show to him,” Aubrey said. They decided to do an Egg Drop Challenge around the Easter holiday. After recruiting a few more staff members to assist, information for all school families was organized to rally participation.
The project – to create a device that will prevent a raw egg from breaking when dropped from a tall height – was encouraged to be completed at home with Clay students and their family members. The challenge was open to all grade levels, Kindergarten through Grade 4, and was a way for students to work collaboratively on STEAM skills.
The event was a hit last year and an even bigger success this year! All contest rules remained the same. However, instead of eggs being dropped from the roof of the school year, the Ephrata Pioneer Fire Company made the drops from the top of their truck ladder! Over 60 students participated, and there was much excitement from all students and staff as they watched and cheered with excitement.
