Peer Tutoring at Ephrata High School

A Peer Tutoring program will soon be an established club at Ephrata High School. The program has been available to students for several years via the EHS guidance counseling department but will be student-led this year.

After many tutors graduated last year, junior Abigail Calkins decided to step up and take the club “up a notch” this year. Abigail was a tutor herself before becoming the program’s lead. She was tutoring three students at once and was able to build meaningful relationships with all of them. One of the classmates she tutored went from straight F’s to B’s and C’s. Another student with social anxiety slowly warmed up to Abigail and was able to make improvements in not only their grades, but social skills as well.

Moving forward, Abigail plans to formally establish the program as an EHS club and put together a tutor leadership team to help manage club logistics. She encourages anyone interested in serving as a tutor or receiving tutoring assistance to sign up:

• Apply to be a tutor by asking a teacher for a recommendation. An interview and training will follow before officially being named as a tutor.

• Students interested in receiving tutoring assistance can ask a teacher or guidance counselor for more information and/or sign up via Schoology.

Tutors are needed and help is available for most any EHS class and subject area. There are roughly twenty tutors in the program as of now, and that number is on the rise. The entire program is independently student-led to establish together meeting times and a learning schedule.
